Conductor Zubin Mehta, born in Bombay April 29, 1936, entered the Vienna Academy of Music, learned to play the double bass and took conducting lessons from Hans Swarowsky. He graduated from the Academy in 1957 and made his professional debut in Vienna, guest conducting the Tonkünstler Orchestra. Victory in the first international conductors' competition organized by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led to a one-year appointment as their assistant conductor. After that, he guest conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the beginning of a long relationship†with that orchestra, and guest conducted many orchestras, to great acclaim. He became Music Director of both the Montreal and Los Angeles orchestras, conducted briefly at the Metropolitan Opera, and had a leadership position with the Israel Philharmonic and became Music Director of the of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.In 1990 Mehta was asked to conduct the first of the now legendary Three Tenors Concerts. . The concert was a huge success, with a worldwide television audience, and enormous record sales. When the phenomenon was repeated in 1994 from Los Angeles, Mehta again conducted. He was quite a showman, indeed. Since 1998, Mehta has been music director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He is a favorite all over the world, and his popularity is reflected in hundreds of recordings for various labels. This valuable Decca multi-disk set contains selected rewordings with three orchestras: the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Israel Philharmonic recorded between 1965 and 1980. This set does not contain all of Mata's rewordings with these orchestras; some are included in another major big-box set, The Decca Sound (REVIEW). All of these recordings were state-of-the-art audio for their time, and sound better than ever in these digital remasterings.
