This is one of the greatet bargains you'll ever encounter! The packaging
is simple and there are no CD notes, but all importnt informtion is there
including recording dates and venues. The earliest recording is Toscanini's
Beethoven dating from 1939 in Queen's Hall, but most of the performances
are from the late '50's and '60's. Many were recorded in Royal Albert
Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and the BBC studios. Throughout we have the
expertise of BBC engineers, who did a magnificent job—almost
all are in stereo. Many of these recordings have been issued previously,
but
now we have
them at this budget price. Jascha Horensein's magnificent Mahler Eighth
here takes just one disk (81:09). This site discussed this famous performance
in detail when it was first issued on IMG/BBC (REVIEW)..
I chided the producers for not including the massive ovation, which was
included in its entirety on the BBC broadcast disks; very little applause
is included on this new reissue, for obvious reasons. To mention just
a few other memorable performnces, we have Igor Markevitch's thrilling
Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, Carlo Maria Giulini in vivid performances
of Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky (quite different from his sedate later
performances), and the powerful Shostakovich of Evgeny Mravinsky. And
we have Emil Gilels, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Wilhelm Kempff, Sviatoslav
Richter and the distinguished Hungarian Anne Fischer. And let us not
forget Mstislav Rostropovich, Galina Vishnevskaya, Dennis Brain, David
Oistrakh, !and Janet Baker! We also have one of the best-sounding
(in spite of its
age)
recordings
of Arturo Toscanini. Don't miss this remarkable set. |
