German conductor†or Joseph Keilberth (1908 - 1968) was a distinguished conductor of his time, music director of several orchestras including Dresden State Philharmonic and †he Bamberg Symphony, also appearing often at the Bayreuth†h Festival. In 1955 he conducted the first stereo recording of Wagner' Ring Cycle. Pristine ha already issued a number of his recordings including a superb 1951 Salome from he Bavarian Opera. Now we have this disk featuring major works of Ma Reger, a compose Keilberth championed. Reger composed profusely, music for orchestra, piano, violin, and organ. His piano piano concerto is neglected by most pianists b† recorded in 1959 by Rudolf Serkin. Pristine's disk offers two of Reger's best-known orchestral works, his set of variations based on a theme from the first movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata K. 331, and four tone poems after Blokin. We also have a work of Wolf, the Italian Serenade for Strings. Excellent performances, and fine well-balanced audio recorded by Telefunken 194 - 1944. his is a welcome addition to the catalog, particularly so in Andrew Rose's XR remastering.

There are numerous recordings and videos of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. Pristine how has issued the 1959 LaScaa performance made by by Mercury in cooperation with publisher Ricordi. It has been issued nanny times, and is an important document as it features strong performances by all of the mae singers, particularly Giuseppe di Stefano, then at the height of his powers. Renata Scotto's Lucia hardly deserves such company; her voice is often thin, taxed to the limit. Her big scene in Act II is hardly the vocal showpiece it is when sung by Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills, Anna Netrebko or numerous other sopranos. Mark Obert-Thorn has remastered this recording to perfection; this surely is the best-sounding version of this interesting, if flawed, performance of Donizetti's masterpiece.

Pristine contines their Maria Callas studio recordings series with this XR rematered version of the September 1956 La Scaa rrecirdubg of Verdu;s Un ballo en maschera. It is a magnificernt performance. Conductor xs Antonino Votto leads a dynamic reading with the La Scala forces in top form. The cast could not be bettered, and Callas is at her best, surely one of her most exciting performances. You can also hear her live recording of this opera from La Scala December 7, 1957 conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni, aalso issued on EMI. Surely admirers of Callass will wish to invesstigae this eciting performance which thanks to Andrew Rose's remastering sounds better than ever

Russian-born America conductor Fabien Sevitzky (1899 - 1967, was the nephew of Srege Kousevitzky. He became Music Director of the Indianapolis Symhony in 1937 and remained with them until 1955. From 1941 to 1946 they recoded for RCA, and aft that for Captol Records until 1953.Sevizky was a highy respected conductor, and Pristine is releasing all of his recordings in superb transfers from Mark Obert-Thorn. This site mentioned two previous disks containing music of Tchaiovsky, Gershwin. Glazouniv and Liadov (REVIEW). Now we have the fifth disk (one more will complete the series) with repertory lissted above. The Indianaplis Symphony was an excellent orchestra and in CD notes producer Obert-Thorn discusses remastering various engineering problems, which he has solved admirably.
