This site has praised a number of BIS issues of music by Finnish composer Sebastiaam Fagerluind including his violin concerto (REVIEW) and a disk of orchestral workx (REVIEW). Now he turns his attention to the cello with amajor work for the indtrument. Nomade is a cello concerto written for Nicolas Altstaedt who is soloist on this recording. There are sixt varied sections to this 38-miute work which is described as a journey by the cellist/wanderer through various landscapes all beautifully depicted by the orchestra. There is ample opportunity for virtuoso display. This is a major addition to the cello catalog. . Fagerlund composed a trilogy abou† basic elements. Water Atlas is the first part; the other two (Stonework / Drifts) have aready been recorded for BIS. The composer's impressioistic instincts are always apparent. ¹hesse performances are dedicated and may be considered definitive. Recordings were made 2019 in Helsinki's Music Center, and the BIS multi0channe audio could not be bettered.

Cuban-Americaan soprano Lisette Oropesa, born in Louisiana in 1983, has had a thriving career in many opera houses including the Met. She sings a wide variety of roles, from baroque to contemporary, and has been praised for her Lucia and Violetta. On this new disk she focuses on Mozart, and we have this generous selection of concert arias and excerpts from operas She is excellent, and is given strong accompaniment by the period-instrument group Il Pano d'Oro directed by Antonello Manacorda. The recordings were made August 2020 in Germany's Himmelfanhirtskirsche, Munich-Sendling. Audio is perfectly balanced and natural. Complete text nd translations are provided. Claudio Monteverdi (1567 - 1643) composed L'Orfeo had its premiere 1607, a major event in the musical world as it is considered to be the first "opera" ever written. With a libretto by Alessandro Striggio, it tells the story of musician and poet Orpheus who descends into the Underworld seeking the release of his bride, the beloved Eurydice. There are many recordings featuring leading singers, and a number of DVD videos as well. This fine new Pentatone SACD set offers a splendid strong cast with period-instrument accompaniment by the 14-member Höör Barock, and and the 9-member Ensemble Altapunta directed by Fredrik Malmberg who also plays the organ. This performance was recorded July/August 2019 in Sweden's Eslövs Lyrka, and the multi-channel audio is perfect. A 72=page booklet contains SACD notes, photos and the complete libretto and translations.
