The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1949. Their first conductor was Eugen Jochum , and since then the music directors have been Rafael Kubelik, Sir Colin Davis, and Lorin Maazel, Since 2003 Mariss Jansons was their leader until his tragic death in December 2019. He previously had been music director of the Oslo Philharmonic for two decades beginning in 11979, , the Pittsburgh Symphony (1997 -b 2004) and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (2004 - 2015). He made numerous recordings for many labels, many praised on his sie. This important mid-price BR Klassik set offers many live performances with the Bavarian Orchestra. All of these have been issued previously, but many early issues were regular stereo (one wonders why they weren't issued multi-track?). Unfortunately the muil-track audio is not impressive, rear channels used solely for ambience. Performances are what one would expect from Jansons, but his Tchaikovsky doesn't' generate excitement. Everything is neat, tidy and hardly suggests the drama and excitement of Francesca. Sill, these are fine performances, a memorial to a conductor who will be sorely missed.

Recently this site praised a Mendelssohn SACD performed by Christoph Schoener on the grand four organs of St Michael's Church in Hamburg. (REVIEW). Now we have another Mendelssohn disk played by Schoener in the same venue We have the varied works listed above, including the last five of the Preludes and Fugues Op. 35 - the first was included on the earlier disk. Again we have masterful performances of often thrilling music, and the engineers have captured the magnificent organ perfectly.

Emanuel Vigeland (1875 -1948) was a famous Norwegian artist whose paintings, sculptures , frescoes and glass mosaics tody are found in many Norweian churches and museums. He is buried in the Emanuel Vigeland Museum in Oslo, a resonanant venue used in this unusual new recording. Kristin Bolstad has composed music meant to be performed there. There are five pieces: Echoes & Shadows, Stilla, , TRY, Mellom Skyene, and Tomba Sonora. There are five singers: Karoline Dahl Gullberg, Gabrielle Sorensen, Julie Kieve, Linnéa Sundfaer Haug,a nd the composer, Kristin Bolstad. They are accompanied by four cellists: Erlend Habbestad, Dag Oysten Berger, Vilde Alme, and Katrine Pedersen. The performers are carefully positioned in the mausoleum, and this is effetively conveyed by the engineering. A diagram in the disk booklet shows specific location for each performer. The must is mostly meditative, and we surey can assume these performances are definitive. This is not the type of repertory I prefer, but if this does appeal to you, and if you have the audio equipment to experience it in varied audio formats availabe: The Blu Ray disk contains: 5.0 DTS HD MA 24/192KHZ, 7.0.4 Dolby Atmos 48KHZ, 2.0 LPCM 24/192/KHZ and 7.0.4 Auro 3D 96KHZ. The second disk contains the same programon SACD. . The booklet contains technical information about the recording along with texts and translationbs. This is an expensive issue, paricularly when one considers that the program lasts ohly about 50 minues.
