2. Dumka, Op. 69. BACH: St. John Passion This site previously mentioned a Liszt disk made by Ukrainian-Canadian pianist Dari1a Telizyn (b. 1960), who died tragically young (REVIEW). On this release we hear a Tchaikovsky program featuring excerpts from The Seasons, The Nutcracker, several other pieces and ending with one of the composer;s most challenging works, Dumka, which many collectors may remember from Vladimir Horowitz's famous 1942 recording (it can be heard on YouTube). Dana Telizyn surely plays all of this music with beautiful tone and virtuosity to spare, and her wonderful playing has been beautifully captured on this Blu Ray audio disk. There are dozens of recordings of Bah's St. John Passion including historic interpretations by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Stephen Cleobury, Karl Munchinger, René Jacob and Karl Richter to mention only a few. Now we have another one, this time on SACD, made May 5-10, 2016 in Stuttgart. Rainer Johannes Homburg leads the ensemble Handel's Company which he founded in 1996. The goal of the ororganization is to create exemplary performances of early music from the Renaissance. The Stuttgart Hymnus Boys' Choir has been around for decades but now has been revitalized. Homburg has been artistic director of the group since 2007. They have made several prize-winning recordings for MDG. For this recording we have eight well-chosen soloists. Surely they as well as the chorus and orchestra all sound impressive. Engineers have captured their pure sound with greatest clarity. There are no texts or translations, but there are 40 tracks. This is a very pricey recording. A much better bargain is the fine recent performance with King's College Choir (REVIEW). MDG continues their scholarly series of recordings of neglected repertory. This SACD offers a group of baroque cantatas from Gdansk, a Polish city on the Baltic coast. Music of four nearly forgotten composers is featured: all are listed above. all during the . All of this 17th and 18th century music is performed in period style by the group of fine soloists and the Goldberg Vocal and Baroque Ensembles directed by Andrej Szadejko. Apparently these were recorded during some kind of Festival—program notes do not clarify. If this ancient repertory appeals to you, here is it done to perfection and very well recorded.
