A magnificent CD in every way: superb performances that sound more
as if they were performed on regular than "period" instruments,
and splendid sound with performers primarily in the front but plenty
of resonance/reflected sound coming from sides and back, quite similar
to the
Charles Mackerras EMI DVDA version . By
way of contrast, the third currently available multi-channel recording
of both works on Vanguard SACD puts
you right in the center of the orchestra - although it doesn't include
the complete Water
Music.
"From the Isles to
the Courts"
Ensemble Galilei (Liz Knowles, fiddle; Deborah Nuse, Scottish small pipes and
fiddle; Sarah Weiner, oboe, recorders, and pennywhistle; Sue Richards, Celtic
harp; Carolyn Anderson Surrick, viola da gamba, with Jan Hagiwara, percussion
and Nancy Karpeles, bowed psaltery).

the stately courts of medieval Spain and 18th Century France to the rugged Isles
of Scotland and Ireland, including a number of their own compositions "written
with a traditional Celtic flavor." Elegant music, elegantly performed
and recorded with remarkable presence. |
