'SACRED FEAST'
Gaudeamus,  Paul Halley, director
DMP SACD 09 TT: 51:30 (5.l channel)

This program was recorded in May 1998 at Trinity College Chapel in Hartford, CT.  It features the 31-member vocal ensemble known as Gaudeamus directed by Paul Halley in 13 acappella sacred selections ranging from Tallis through Messiaen.  These are very fine performances, beautifully recorded, with the multi-channels capturing the chapel's rich acoustics; it is unfortunate the chapel's organ and bells weren't used in some of the repertory - in surround sound this would have been impressive.  Here's another SACD disk with limited playing time.

MOZART:  Sinfonia Concertante in E Flat, K. 364.  Concerto in D for Violin and Piano, K. Anh. 56 (reconstructed by Philip Wilby)
Midori, violin; Nobuko Imai, viola; NDR Symphony Orch/Christoph Eschenbach, pianist-conductor
SONY SS 89488 TT: 58:334 (5 channel)

This fine CD features Wilby's reconstruction of a Concerto for Violin and Piano of which Mozart completed only 120 bars. It surely is a pleasant work, unauthentic though it may be, superbly played here, as is the more familiar K. 364. I find the multi-channel sound extraordinary in every way, beautifully balanced with warm, natural textures, the soloists nicely placed. Recommended.
