Henri Sauguet (1891 - 1989), well-known in his native France, studied with Joseph Canteloube (Songs of the Auvergne), and was a protégé of Darius Milhaud. , He composed four symphonies, concertos for various instruments and much chamber music, but is best-known for his ballets. Serge Diaghilev commissioned Le Chatte (The Cat) choreographed by the young Georges Balanchine. It was a great success, and resulted in several other ballets including Les Forains (The Underground People or The Snow Folk, a suite from which is heard on this new disk. There are twelve brief varied sections to this 25-minute ballet. The success of this in 1945 and formation of Les Ballets des Champs-ÉlysEees by Roland Petit and Boris Kochno resulted in Ibert's ballet Les Amores de Jupiter, premiered the following year. There are 18 brief sections to this 33-minute work. Jules Massenet (1842 - 1812) wrote more than 2 dozen operas. Hérodiade was composed in 1881 and revised three yeas later. While generally unknown, there have been two recordings with leading singers. On this new disk we have the ten-minuteballet music from Act IV s danced by ballerinas celebrating Roman victories. The five brief sections; several are quite exotic. Neemi Järvi conducts with his usual energy, but it is unfortunate the Estonian orchestra is not at its best, with thin orchestral sound. How unfortunate these recordings weren't mae with a better orchestra. The Chandos engineers have captured the rather weak orchestral sounds very clearly.

Austrian conductor Hans Rosbaud (1895 - 1962) was a legendary figure. He could play virtually any instrument with a particular affinity for the piano. As he conductor, his vast repertory ranged from standard clasics to the most contemporary composers of his time. He made many commercial recordings, and recently the SWR CLASSICS las issued a number of milti-dick sets of live performances. Already issued are albums devoted to Bruckner, Haydn, Mozart, Wagner and Tchjaikovsky. The latest is thie set containing of Brahms, all four symphonies, the two serenades, and the two piano concertos with major soloists: Walter Gieseking plays Concerto No. 2, G∑esa Anda plauys cncerto No. 1. Rosbaud became chief conductor of the SWR Orchewtra in 1948, a position he held for the rest of his life. It is a fine orchestra. These Bahms recordings wee made 1950 - 1962, and engineering is acceptable mno.

Finnish bassoonist Jaakko Luoma has been principal bassoonist of the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Orchestre de Paris. He also has a distinguished solo career, and now we have his second recording. His first on the BIS label featured Weber's Bassoon Concerto. Now we have four more concertos. Of particular interest is the Bassoon Concerto of German composer Peter von Winter (1754-1825). He was best known for his operas and is virtually forgotten today. His bassoon concerto (he wrote two for the instrument) is a delight. We also have the more familiar concertos of Mozart and Hummel. Filling out the disk is a rarity, a Bassoon Concerto written in 1845 that may or may not have been by Rossini. It is a charming work in three movements ending with a rollicking Rondo. Excellent, virtuoso performances here and the recording made in Tapiola Concert Hall August 2017, and sonically is impressive.
