This Van Gogh documentary is superb. Featuring experts at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, it gives insight into the Dutch painter's troubled life by quoting from many of his letters. His sources of inspiration are clarified as well as his his visionary concept of art. All of his well-known paintings are here plus many lesser-known works and sketches. The five chapters are: Early Years, Dutch Period, Antwerp and Paris, Arles, and Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. The fascinating second DVD contains interviews with members of the Van Gogh family and the Director of the Van Gogh Museum. All of this has been photographed in remarkable clarity. A major issue for collectors!

Gardens always have fascinated artists nd been their subject. Paintings by Monet, Pissaro, Matisse and Sargent are the best-known, but, here, as the program notes say, "The work of these great artists, along with many others, feature in a major exhibition, Painting the Modern Garden, from The Royal Academy of Art, London. We see many of the masterpieces inspired by gardens as well as the gardens themselves, It is a meaningful,m beautiful journey filmed and directed by David Bickerstaff. First-class all the way.

This new Blu Ray disk contains performances previously released but now we have them in digital technology. .Marilyn Horne sings her big aria from Vivaldi's Orlando from the San Francisco Opera. David Daniels is seen in excerpts from Handel's Rinaldo as presented in Munich's Prinzreegententheater, Yvonne Kenny is seen in music from Handel's Julio Cesare and Purcell's The Fairy Queen, from the Austrian Opera and the English National Opera, and Ann Murray sings music from Handel's Xerses from the English National Opera. Brilliant performances all, major singers at their best. One might question why these are issued on Blu Ray. These surely are prime examples of baroque opera at its best. Original sources are dated (the earliest is 1990).If you have previous issues, there's little need to get this new one.
