BERLIOZ: Symphonie fantastique, Op,. 14. SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 5 in D minor IVES: Holidays Symphony Here are the latest three in the admirable San Francisco Symphony Orchestra series Keeping Score, featuring Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony performing familiar—and unfamiliar—classics. Each disk includes an informal and detailed analysis of the music along with a complete performance recorded live. Of most interest here is the explanation of the Ives symphony, a very complex work that means much more with Thomas's clarification. Performances are of the highest quality, and it's interesting to note that the Shostakovich symphony was recorded during a performance in Royal Albert Hall September 1, 2007 during the BBC Proms. The concert performances have been issued on budget CDs. The DVDs are premium-priced, the Blu-ray versions more so—a hefty price for an educational project. As with all SFO releases, audio is superb, as is video. R.E.B. (February 2010) |
